My work as a sound artist often relies on a process of spontaneous inspiration and intuitive composition, treating any intentionally (or sometimes unintentionally) recorded sound as potential for sonic transmutation, no matter the fidelity. Such was the case with Teien.

The sound matter for this composition was gathered during my first visit to the state of Oregon. Having left my field recorder behind, I used my phone to gather short sonic documents with the intention of heavily transforming them in the studio. Being in a new environment surrounded by lush greenery, massive trees, and flowing gardens, the idea/outline for Teien came to me rather naturally.

Teien can be seen as a continuation of the aesthetic that emerged around CB-R847-B-010 (2022). It is a sound composition that strings together various movements to form a narrative-like collage while appreciating the fidelity of the source material for its transformative potential. Furthermore, it takes a reductionist approach in degrading audio quality to achieve particular timbres and digital artifacts.

This approach goes hand in hand with my fascination for digital photography and the use of inexpensive, portable cameras to capture blurred, digital artifact-containing, or blatantly digital images that allow for a new type of expression and agency (see [no]objects (2022)). The photographs used as the cover and on the CD layout were taken on the same trip that the audio recordings were made and when combined with the sonic composition, a new acousmatic experience emerges that goes beyond temporal and geographical bounds.
