"Nicholas Maloney hails from Jackson, MS, and offers a monolithic label debut to Psøma with FORMS WITHIN SPACES. It consists of five pieces that explore resonances within a variety of interior spaces through the process of recording room tones, various objects, and instruments, then amplifying and re-recording the sound back into the room thus capturing the unique sonic characteristics of these areas.

FORMS WITHIN SPACES is quiet music, functionally speaking, and will work wonderfully when used as a sleep aid, a meditation or simply some tonal coloring for your room while you read books or relax. It would easily appeal to fans of the lowercase sound designs of Richard Chartier, Francisco Lopez and France Jobin, but listeners who enjoy synthesizer drones from Eliane Radigue would also find a lot to love here. Maloney's interesting experimentation with room resonance and selective feedback also brings to mind masters such as Alvin Lucier as well as contemporary minds like Yann Novak. FORMS WITHIN SPACES is not inaccessible, despite the long runtimes, and we encourage listeners to experiment with different methods of playback, at different decibel levels and also in and out of headphones.
