Everyday at around 12:30, I take a walk. To leave the digital world and reconnect with the nearby nature. I cross the busy street on which I live, dodging cars, to get to the Sevenmile Creek field. This is not the most ideal place to make field recordings as it is still in close proximity to the road. Here, all sounds of nature must compete with the roar of engines, screeching of tires, and revving of motors. However, this is the soundscape I have lived with right outside my door for almost 2 years now. Even indoors, the traffic can be heard from the living room.
I wished to transform the noisy sound world of the Sevenmile Creek field into something that I would enjoy listening to more, that would be less exhausting on my ears, and most of all, quieter. On three such post-lunch walks in the field, throughout December and January, I made recordings which became the source material for this record. To work with the material, I subjected it to a series of generative processes. Then, using the newly transformed material, arranged and delicately morphed it into a new, abstract sound world. The resulting Three Phases is a nonrepresentational, dreamlike sound-reality.
By default, I recommend listening on headphones, in a quiet room, preferably in the dark. However, I leave this in the hands of the listener. Perhaps this record may provide subtle room coloration, or create a new dialog as it interacts with the sound of your own environment and imagination.
All sound is belonging to a particular environment and is transmuted into an alternate environment by sensory intake and imagination. My work relies on creating new, imagined environments from which these sound pieces unfold. Each environment is transitory and impermanent. It will never appear the same way twice. The field I walk across each day is always changing, even when I do not stop to notice.
